Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Hamatreya"

Flowers and bouquets of flowers have language of meaning of their own. Most of us know that a dozen of roses means "Be mine", 3 roses means "I Love You". But did you know, for example that a primrose means "I can't live without you" or a purple hyacinth means, "Please forgive me". And many people think (especially in Malaysia), carnations shows love, care and respect to someone, especially to the mothers. But did you know that different colours of carnations do bring different kind of meanings; some are positive and some are negative one.
Flowers meanings have been used to convey ideas, feelings, and messages for centuries. The word, floriography, has been used for the assignments of meaning to flowers. There is a meaning to colours of flowers, to numbers of flowers, and to groups of flowers. It is a kind of silent language that has been largely lost to us through lack of use.
